Liberty Day

Today should be a national holiday.  It should be called "Liberty Day" on behalf of the 34 brave men who lost their lives on the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

The Liberty was a ship that was sent to the Middle East to monitor an ongoing war there on behalf of the UN.  It was an unprovoked attack that occurred in International waters.

This was an attack that was committed against a nation that the United States was not at war with, though it had been allied with the Soviet Union.

But speculation is probably pointless now.  Whatever the reason, our own sailors were murdered by a foreign country for the crime of trying to maintain peace in the Middle East.

So I suggest that this day be made into a national holiday of remembrance.

Besides, calling it Liberty Day has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
