There is a natural law that I firmly believe is real. The larger the institution, the more inefficient and ineffective it becomes. This applies to all organizations that have been created by man, no matter what their purpose is or how they are organized. Eventually, they become ineffective due to inefficiency.
If you think about it, this is probably the inevitable consequence of organizing into larger and larger groups. In smaller groups, people work well together, despite the many differences that these people may have, provided they have a common goal in mind.
This is largely true for things like business. Small businesses usually are able to flex their way into certain things because they need to be competitive otherwise they’ll lose business. The larger businesses got to where they are largely because they were successful at what they did.
But as businesses expand, so does the number of people employed there. Sooner or later, the people begin to clash with each other because the more people you get in a room, the more likely you are going to see a bunch of assholes annoying other people and each other.
This is why you can probably haggle at a corner shop but probably cannot haggle at the checkout register at a Target. The low-level cashier has no authority to lower the prices of the items or any competence at ensuring that both parties of the transaction walk away with a win-win situation. The small business shop, however, is probably operated by the owners or someone close to the owners and will more than likely be willing to haggle, if the situation is favorable for it.
By and large, this is why I oppose big government in all its forms for whatever reason. The larger government gets, the more ineffective and inefficient it becomes in doing its prescribed job. When you combine this with the fact that government cannot be opposed because they wield legal force, you get a situation where it is operated by malcontents who enjoy making people miserable. Ever had trouble at the post office and decided to go to UPS or FedEx because despite the expense, the service is better? Have you ever tried to straighten something out with the DMV? Have you ever tried to get your criminal record expunged due to a court order?
The fact is, no matter how much you think the government will operate like a fine-tuned machine, it doesn’t and most certainly never will. All the problems that you have will be deferred to another agency or in another government entity entirely because government isn’t there to serve the people. Despite what they may say, government is there to harass you if you run afoul of one of their laws.
And since we have literally thousands of laws on the books, it’s only a matter of time before they come after you for whatever reason. The best thing you can do is to simply keep off their radar as long as you can. One day, though, they will come and hit you hard with some kind of ridiculous fine or criminal charge that you either didn’t know existed or didn’t commit entirely.
And on that day, the people will look at you with scorn because you broke the law. It doesn’t matter if the charges are false. You will be guilty, even if you prove your innocence.
That is the curse of big government. It is not our salvation, it is our millstone on our collective necks.
