Tomorrow the state of Massachusetts will be holding a special election to see who gets to be Senator in place of the late Notorious B.I.G. The candidates are Martha Coakley, a Democrat, Scott Brown, a Republican, and Joe Kennedy, apparently a libertarian, though running as an independent. As much as I hate to admit it, Joe Kennedy has no chance of winning tomorrow, although I would vote for him.
In light of this, I would rather see Martha Coakley win. Don’t get me wrong, Martha Coakley is a big liberal who will tow the party line with the Democrats. Any Left-wing bill that is put on the floor of the Senate she will vote in favor of and she would nothing more than the Democrats leaders’ bitch. I have absolutely no illusions about her nature or her politics.
But I don’t trust Scott Brown. He looks to be a big-time RINO and is apparently the biggest liberal Republican in the Massachusetts state senate. His voting record is one of extreme Statism, much like Martha Coakley is. We already have two RINOs in the Senate right now, both from Maine, who will probably vote with the Democrats on the next round of health care bill votes. We don’t need another wild card in the Senate.
I know, having Martha Coakley in office is about as horrifying as having Barack Obama in office. I know that many conservatives have rallied to Scott Brown’s side in the hopes of preventing health care. But I don’t think very many people have really thought this through or analyzed the long-term effects of a Senator Scott Brown. In the long run, he will hurt this nation and cause more Statism, not less, despite maybe voting against Obamacare.
I say this with the full confidence that in the past RINOs have always screwed all of us over in some fashion or another. Remember what John McCain did the conservative jurists? Remember what Arlen Specter did to the Republican party this past year? The thing about the Republican party is that there is no party loyalty, only gentlemen’s agreements which are only as good as the smile in which they are given. Democrats command tons of loyalty from their own party, largely because the collectivist mind allows them to not think for themselves and instead defer to the higher ups.
If Martha Coakley wins, then Obamacare can still royally fail. The fact of the matter is, it was passed in the House last year by only three votes. Now that we are in an election year, many House members will be looking more toward securing their own seats and collective asses rather than supporting the extreme agendas of the San Franciscan stretch-face herself. Three votes was barely a pass in the House.
On top of that, this special election alone is a signal to Democrats in the more conservative districts that their jobs are on the line. Even in the more liberal districts, it shows that the people are more and more unsatisfied with what the government, as it is being lead by Democrats, is doing. I have a feeling that many Democrats, not just the so-called “blue dogs,” are a little bit nervous about this whole thing.
If Coakley wins, we are sure that we will have a Statist Democrat who is willing to the lick the boot of Sir Harry Reid. But at least we won’t have a faux-conservative in office just because we wanted to gain a short-term victory.
You don’t compromise your principles of limited government and vote for a Statist just because he opposes one Statist policy and supports all the others. That is the prime example of the default of conservatism that continues to this day.
